The fatigue epidemic

Fatigue has become an epidemic. It has become so common that people think it’s normal to be fatigued, but it’s anything but normal, and indicates there are imbalances in your body.

Fatigue is a spectrum. It can manifest as mild or moderate tiredness, reduced energy, physical or mental exhaustion, brain fog or lack of motivation – or it can manifest as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), otherwise called systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID), a very complex condition that is not well understood.

Factors that can contribute to fatigue

Fatigue can be the result of many different factors, often occurring simultaneously, including:

  • A disrupted circadian rhythm
  • Poor diet / lack of certain nutrients
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Sleep dysfunction such as insomnia or sleep apnoea
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Lack of exercise
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Chronic allergies or intolerances
  • Infections and viruses, for example glandular fever
  • Anaemia
  • Serious or chronic illness

How can we find the cause of your symptoms?

Sometimes, the cause of your tiredness or fatigue may be simple to determine through diet or lifestyle analysis or standard blood tests. Other times, further testing may be needed. With very complex cases, it can take time to unravel what’s going on, although there are generally some natural strategies we can employ to improve your symptoms in the meantime.
